5 SPF Mistakes People are Still Making

And how to avoid them...

It can be easy to treat your SPF like a "set and forget" task, but sun safety is more than a one-off chore. We've rounded up the top five mistakes people commonly make when it comes to sun protection and how you can help prevent causing damage to your skin in the future.

Let's get into it.

Mistake #1 - Not Applying Enough

The average adult needs about seven teaspoons of sunscreen for complete body and face coverage. For your face, the "two finger rule" is a good benchmark. Squeeze sunscreen along your index and middle fingers for an amount that covers your face and neck.

Mistake #2 - Not Reapplying

Even water-resistant formulas need topping up. The Australian Cancer Council recommends topping up every 2 hours or straight after swimming or excessive sweating

Mistake #3 - Skipping SPF on cloudy days

UV rays penetrate clouds, so overcast skies are not a reason to skip SPF. Keep your skin protected, whatever the weather.

Mistake #4 - Forgetting ears, scalp & hands

These areas are very prone to sun damage, make sure you're protecting your whole body (including your lips!)

Mistake #5 - Thinking a window protects you

UVA rays pass through glass! Ensure you're protected when you're inside near a window or in the car.

Got Questions? We've Got the Answers:

Are SPF Sprays Effective For Reapplication?

Yes, SPF sprays are effective when used correctly.

It’s crucial to apply a generous amount to achieve the full level of protection indicated on the label.

Follow product directions to get the labelled SPF protection.

Do You Need to Reapply Sunscreen Indoors?

You don’t need to reapply sunscreen as frequently indoors unless you are close to windows or reflective surfaces. However, keep in mind that UVA rays can penetrate glass if you’re sitting next to a window, and that can contribute to cumulative skin damage.

It’s worth noting that UV exposure greatly depends on where you sit and the UV rating outdoors. Outdoors, quick outings, even a quick coffee run without proper protection, can also add up over time.

Can I use a powder SPF for reapplication?

Powder SPFs haven’t been proven to be as reliable as other forms of sunscreen. They can provide patchy coverage, making it difficult to achieve consistent protection.

For the best protection, stick to creams, mists, or sticks.
