Zinc sunscreen looks gray on darker skin because zinc oxide particles sit on the surface and reflect visible light as a faint white film. On fair skin it's barely noticeable. Against deeper tones, where the contrast is stronger, it reads gray or ashy. Here's the good news: the cast is cosmetic, not a protection problem, and modern formulas have largely solved it.
What Causes the Cast
Zinc oxide protects partly by scattering light, and the same property that scatters UV scatters a little visible light too. Older formulas with larger particles leave a heavier film, and the deeper your skin tone, the more visibly that film shows. It's physics, not a flaw in your skin or your application.
The Three Fixes
Finer-dispersion zinc formulas spread thinner and disappear better. Tinted mineral sunscreens counteract the film with a skin-tone shade.
